Charles Potts Magic Windmill Band

Dirk Michener and Travis Catsull started playing New York City style experimental country music in 2002 on a balcony in Denton, TX. After playing tons of campfires, house parties, mexican food restaurants and a W. Coast tour the Windmill Band brought in new members and instruments. Now, their multi-harmonics are a blissed out spectacle of working man’s country that is funny, thought provoking and blatantly honest. Their audience includes bikers, poets, folk enthusiasts, old people, indie rock fags and screaming drunk girls.

Count Draculas Weed Smuggling Jam Engine

“Welcome to the post-mushroom trip beer buzz”, starts out a song called, “Making Porn Movies with Mr. Ed” and it gets weirder from there. Fronted by Smokey Farris, and other Business Deal Associates Tim Bond, Preston Dukes and Scott. Jam Engine brings a high energy, psychedelic rock with lyrics that will give you a “What did he just say?” feeling all in good time. Amazing live shows and regularly released recordings are easy to look foward to. Voted by The Onion as one of the worst names for a rock band in 2007.

Business Deal Records | Fishboy

Fishboy

Fishboy is a four-piece eccentric indie pop band from Denton, TX that began as the bedroom solo project of front man Eric Michener. He was given the nickname on a middle-school field trip after a dare to pluck and swallow a fish at the Dallas World Aquarium. Six years and several shoe boxes full of cassette tapes later, Michener moved from the suburbs to the Texas rock-and-roll Mecca of Denton with a handful of low budget recordings released by the close-knit Austin music collective Business Deal Records.

Business Deal Records | Gene Defcon

Gene Defcon

Gene Defcon is your typical, everyday, average mega-genius. In the mornings he wakes to a pre-recorded loop of math equations set to the soaring sounds of Mozart. Around 11 AM he watches a videocassette of the movie “Baby Geniuses” and chews on dried fruit and exotic nuts. At noon he dons his hawk glove and stands outside his apartment waiting for a trained hawk to roost on his outstretched arm.

Hard Rock Zombie

Hard Rock Zombie is a folk singer who lives on the big island of Hawaii and/or the Blue Mountains of the Great Northwest, depending on the season. From an interview with Hard Rock Zombie himself:, “Well… as you all know.. the REAL “Hard Rock Zombie” died in a smokestack on da outskirts of LA, years ago… but after a freak accidental seance filled me with his spirit spit… i’ve been channelling strange songs ever since… the messages from beyond don’t always come in too clearly, but that’s okay, because neither do my recordings.”

Pataphysics

Pat Healy, a former Zom Zom, is an excellent frontman, already adept at spazzing and twisting and doing the “shoulder dance.” As Pataphysics, he initially played solo as a sort of hyperactive Gary Wilson, but he’s now backed by Dirk Michener on bass, Chef Pittman on drums, Erich Ragsdale on synth, and Matt La Comette (also of electro project Aunt’s Analog) on lead guitar. A typical show involves hearty audience participation, a great cover of Red Krayola’s “Hurricane Fighter Plane,” the channeling of early Devo, and possibly a chance to see Healy convulse like Richard Simmons after a Sizzler buffet binge. – Audra Schroeder

The Telephone Company

The Austin-based acoustic rockers call themselves a “hardcore children’s band,” which is more or less accurate. Riding on the same wave of talent-optional energy that makes punk music so kick ass, the duo’s often senseless, musicality chaotic tunes (think Violent Femmes, but with less plot) will either delight or irritate both you and kids, depending on your persuasion. Chef and Pat, the oddballs behind TTC, were playing to grown-ups in coffee shops in 2002 when Pat got cross-wise with the law, and was required to do community service. The two started playing gigs in day cares to make up the hours, and one year later, they’d already been voted “Best Performance Art for Kids” by the Austin Chronicle. -Jonathon Morgan of parentdish.com

Shapes Have Fangs

SHF’s R&B pop tones certainly come from revisiting the music of a certain time; Coffey’s father introduced him to the Kinks and bands of that ilk, but he and the other members also dig the Meters as much as old country. Shapes Have Fangs aren’t trying to replicate that era; they’ve a reverence for it. Since forming in 2006, they’ve tweaked and fine-tuned their sound, becoming a tightly wound force live. Coffey stomps down melodies with guitarist/keyboardist Skyler McGlothlin, as brother/drummer Evan McGlothlin and bassist Josh Willis lock into a groove and ride it hard. It’s the kind of music that would sound good with those snaps and pops. -Audra Schroeder of The Austin Chronicle
