“Gene
figures out the president wasn´t really assassinated and announces
it on national television, ants eating
tortillas, love and dancing and professing that love to your sweet-heart.
With lines like, "I miss you more than Stevie Wonder shootin´
some hoop" it´s hard to question the sincerity of Gene´s
devotion. There´s also an odd perversion lingering in the lyrics.
For instance, "like the little black boy inside the mask of a big, white clown / you were dirty from the inside out" or "its so sick to restrict my fix, I´m addicted to the chick and the plot is getting thick again, I must unleash it or I´ll drown..." make you wonder of the smiling insecurity, the soft aggression injected into some of the songs.” The Gene Defcon band formerly included members of Bikini Kill, Tight Bros. From Way Back When, Bangs, Mocket, and The Primadonnas. Gene's upcoming cd on Retard Disco should be out by the time you are reading this. |

Zom Zoms Static One Brain 2004 Omega Point Records Pray to Zom Zoms One Brain 2004 Omega Point Records |
Zom
Zoms are an insane Technicolor splotch of bleeping synthesizers and
curling guitars originally from Tuba City, AZ who are much be- loved
by the hip-ster set. Led by unhinged front-spectacle Zom Philmapster,
the trio has succeed-ed in polarizing audiences across the country thanks
to their recent US tour. Recently, the boys were picked by the Austin
Chronicle as one of SXSW 2005's Picks & Sleepers. They have a new
CD, One Brain, coming out on Omega Point Re- cords this summer, as well
as a separate vinyl only EP. Fans of Devo, Oingo Boingo, Suicide and
XTC beware. Look for them on tour this May across the west coast. More at www.tubezomzoms.com |

![]() Teenage Dog Peace Pipe from "Year of the Teenage Dog" Black President from "Year of the Teenage Dog" |
Teenage
Dog plays short, simple songs with mechanically clean precision. Comparisons
to Unrest, the Yummy Fur, Sonic Youth, and the Talking Heads are welcome.
The band formed in early 2003, weeks after the dissolution of Austin
new wavers Robots, Please! In 2004, the band recorded
their debut CD, The Year of the Teenage Dog, and played religiously
to in-the-know individuals throughout Austin. In 2005 the band finished their second release, Port Huron. This time around
the lyrics were pointed and confrontational and the hooks were laser-focused.
The Dogs claim the release is intended to be "a call to action
aimed at the burned-out hippies and Yippies turned Yuppies” of
Central Texas. Original band members appearing on "Year of the
Teenage Dog" recordings are guitarists David Morley and Adam Jones,
Isabel Martin on bass, and drummer Nathan Hager. For their latest release Nathan was replaced on drums by Chad A. of Zom Zoms. The final line-up had Nathan returning to play drums and Jennifer Moore replacing Isabel Martin. They disbanded later that year when David Morely moved to Chicago. |

"Dorothy and Chrissie (Waiting for You)" "Campfire Polly"(featuring Isabel Martin) Sugary Glue and A Bow of Bees (2004) Meandering Way Records "Telephone Twist" "Rich Girl" unreleased |
Cavedweller
(Dirk Michener) describes his sound as, "quiet ramshackle lo-fi
psychedelic folk." When touring with his 3-piece band he espouses,
" [a] loud ramshackle echoey psychedelic rock dance party." The Cavedweller band, featuring band members James Oswald and Preston
Dukes, toured the west coast in 2004 in support of his album Sugary Glue and a Bow of Bees.

FishboyQuatro Little d (to be released on Business Deal in 2005) |
Like
fellow Business Deal mainstays Gene Defcon and Cavedweller, Fishboy
has grown from a solo home recording project of strong pop sensibility
and wit, to a full-on live band and hit machine. In 2005, songwriter Eric Michener
(Fishboy) and his band mates Adam Avermascue (Sweatpants), Winston Reed
Chapman (Slapbracelet), and Brady Goodwin (High-C) released their first album recorded as a full band: Little d, a tribute
to their home town of Denton Texas. |

This
project is coordinated by DJ Tanner (aka Fishboy aka Eric Michener).
Members on these recordings are DJ Tanner, MC Lick-A-Tongue, and MC
TNT (Trinidad n' Tobago). Rapping about NBA basketball players from
the 90-91 season over “legally cleared” samples is what
these sports fans are all about. |
|||||||
![]() Fart Face Donavan unreleased |
Fart
Face is Jennifer Moore and Isabel Martin. They were originally
a 4-track experimental band, but quickly switched from their 4-track
collage technique to writing and covering minimalistic songs based on
pretty harmonies. It was a side project from their bands Voxtrot and
Teenage Dog respectively. Isabel moved away from Austin to New York
in September of 2004. Fart Face only played three shows and completed
their only recordings of the new style with Chef on drums the day before
Isabel moved. UPDATE: Isabel has returned to Austin and the band has reformed under the new name Yellow Fever. |

Charles
Potts Magic Windmill BandAir Wolf Becky (Compact Disc) ©2004 Business Deal Records Boat Trip Becky (Compact Disc) ©2004 Business Deal Records |
They
play New York City-style experimental country music, simple as that.
Naming themselves after the Pacific Northwest's most wealthy poet, Charles
Potts, has turned out to be a fortunate move. Potts has decided to fund
their 2005 Summer tour and upcoming CD and 7" release. The Windmill
Band's singing duet comprised of Dirk Michener (Cavedweller) and Travis Catsull team up onstage as well as in life. CPMWB adds a comic flair to a tried and tested "working man's" musical genre that never ceases to intrigue and entertain. They work brilliantly together and stand as one of the top projects within the organ-ization. Look them up on myspace.com/charlespottsmagicwindmillband to find out when they are coming through your town. |

![]() The Old-Timerz Dance from "12 song demo" Nermal from "12 song demo" Date with Myself unreleased |
The
Old-Timerz are a the new break out Austin party group containing members
of the Prima Donnas (of Kill Rock Stars
& Peek-a-boo Records), Gene Defcon (K Records, Retard Disco), Zom Zoms and the Telephone Company. Fans would probably refer to their music as post-pubescent bubble gum rap, minus the rap. Others describe them as "a bad Herman's Hermits." Their set is upbeat and melds perfectly into the current party rock scene of Austin. The crowds that fill Austin's bars and night clubs sing along to the quirky wordplay describing campus life, sex, drugs, and keg parties. |
|||||||
![]() Hard Rock Zombie I'm the Only One with Wings |
“All
I do is flinch and inch towards the edge" – HRZ. He currently lives in Hawaii still writing and recording beautiful music in solitude and peace. |
|||||||
Catsull,
Dukes and Defcon- just an impromptu recording session . Preston
Dukes, Travis Catsull, and Gene Defcon whipped both the songs featured
on this disc the same night. |

|||||||
![]() Maya Bond Cute Papa from "Pink Drums, Purple Lights" Scary Story from "Pink Drums, Purple Lights" |
Maya
Bond was four years old when her record was made in early 2004. She
is from Osaka, Japan and Austin, Texas. Her debut record "Pink
Drums, Purple Lights" is a fun and strange exploration into this
artist's fantasies, developed throughout by her spontaneous lyrical
abilities. T.W. Bond sets the sound track that compels such imagery
as treasure chests consisting of, "…bubble gums and dead
people and eyes and teeth and candy." |
|||||||
![]() The Wyndyms Cocaine Money |
Preston
Dukes and Timothy Bond are The Wyndyms. For the first time since the
band's early period of 1994 1997, the tongue in cheek album rock style
song smiths are working to complete a major studio work and plan to
tour with a hand-picked back up band. Dukes' raspy, wailing guitar solos
infuse an energy comp-arable to the most invigorating of Axe Handlers.
Tim's bright, clear and adaptive voice compliments the lyrically dark
comedic songwriting style. This song writing duo writes foremost from
a conceptual standpoint in that they elaborate on genre. The typical
Wyndyms recordings run the gamut that incorporates numerous song styles.
The fusion of both Wyndyms' respective strengths creates a sound that
speaks to both the adventurous and versatile listener. |

![]() T.W. Bond Proper Grave unreleased |
He
is at the epicenter of in-house sound engineering and production at
Business Deal. Tim's own Bay Side Studios serves as the principal recordingm
studio for Business Deal artists working in Austin. His mastery of studio
equipment and willingness to add his ideas and musical skills makes
it possible, in real time, to achieve a polished finished product while
holding true to Business Deal's impromptu style of conceptualizing,
composing and performing original numbers. His solo projects have included creating an original music score for the yet unreleased film Il Circo Cinese, as well as post production recording for motion pictures. He is currently working on a studio album. The soundtrack to Il Circo Cinese was conceptualized and recorded on an analog 4-track in a small dark basement under an apartment complex in Osaka, Japan in 200?. “Proper Grave” comes from his new album which is still being recorded. |
|||||||
The
Uncanny LunkheadsReba McEntire unreleased |
Just
a fancy way of describing the songwriting efforts of Dirk Michener and
Smokey Farris. Probably the first real “Business Deal” project
beginning in 1989. They have continued to write strange songs together
over the years. |
|||||||
The Telephone Company Mr. Peanut and Panda Brain unreleased |
Pat
and Chef are Austin's youngest and strangest children's music performers
and they have set out to make songs with edgy subject matter kids can
enjoy too. The Telephone Company just might win over the youth of today
now that they are booked to play over 30 Texas public schools and libraries
in 2005. UPDATE: They did win over the youth of America and their new album, Panda Brain, will prove this to everyone later in 2006. |
|||||||
The Video Screams Mormon Light |
Besides
being our friends, The Video Screams include yet another little brother of an old guard Business Deal entertainer. Matt, Gene Defcon's little brother, plays the drums. This is an early recording of the band done in 2004 by T.W.Bond before they added a keyboard player. "They now buzz with duel guitar/keyboard fury. With 18-year-old Ryan Foster's odd key signature and 17-year-old Roy Tatum's staccato yelps, they recorded with Tim Kerr(The Big Boys) this spring, and are well on their way to punk rock glory." -said somebody at the chroncile |

The
E Z Snaps with Smokey Farris |
Every
once in a while Pat and Chef write a song that has nothing to do with
any of their 5 other projects and thus a theme developed, nerd jams.
With the addition of Smokey Farris their writing was elevated too. |
|||||||
The PineconesPuff Head unreleased |
The
Pinecones is Chef and Jennifer Moore’s cute little song-writing
side project. They both now play in The Carrots. |
